Something Blue
My good friends Cindy and Brad were married last weekend. They asked me to read at their wedding and I was so honored.
The wedding was at St. Albert's church, which Marilene and I call our second home, (We like to go church shopping and explore area churches when we don't go to our neighborhood church, Our Lady of Lourdes. But we have gotten attached to St. Albert's and the Dominican brothers who give wonderful theologically rich homilies.)
Cindy's spiritual director Fr. Mathieu, a Jesuit from Africa, gave the homily. In it he compared the marital relationship to a stream and a tree. The stream flows, supporting and nurturing the tree while the tree stands firm. "Some days, the husband will be the tree and the wife the stream and others the wife the tree and the husband the stream," Father said.
At one point, Cindy and Brad brought a bouquet of flowers to a statue of the Virgin Mary and prayed a Hail Mary. Cindy also wore a blue rosary around her wrist during the entire ceremony and reception afterwards. "Mary has helped us so much," she explained to me.
I feel so honored to have two such wonderful, faithful friends and I wish them happiness and endless joy in their marriage.
